They have lived up to the times and are still alive in the hearts of Punjabis and the lovers of poetry across the world. Below mentioned is the description about few of the famous poets of Punjab.
He was the poet of 12-13th century. Baba farid was sufi preacher and was a saint of Chishti order. He is also recognized as the first poet of Punjabi language. He is also considered to be among the 15 sikh devotees. His works are also included in the holy book of Guru Granth Sahib. His dead remains lie in the Pakapattan which is in the Pakistani Punjab.
He was the writer of 15th century. His full name was Damodar Das Arora. He was the author of most famous and immortal love story of Heer Ranjha. This was the first Punjabi language poem for this love legend. This was also known as Heer Damodar.
He belonged to 16th century. Shah Hussain (1538-1599) was a sufi poet. He was born in Lahore and is pioneer of the Kafi form of Punjabi Poetry. He was fond of a Brahmin boy named Madho. Together they were known as Madho Lal Hussain. Madho’s tomb is located near Hussain’s shrine.
Sultan Bahu was a poet of 16-17th century. He was born in Pakistani province of Punjab. He has written more than 40 books on Sufism. His works also revolves around Islam; however, he became popular due to his Punjabi Poetry. His verses form an important part of Kawwalis and kafi.
Saleh Muhammad Safoori
He belonged to 17th century. He was sufi poet of southern Punjab. His important writings were the mystical stories of southern Punjab.
Bulleh Shah (1680-1757) was a famous philosopher and a sufi poet. He is proficient writer of Kafi style of writing. Bulleh Shah’s poetry contains a strong criticism for the religious orthodoxy if Islam.
He was a poet of 18th century. He has contributed mostly to the Punjabi literature. His best work is the originative narration of the traditional folk tale of Heer-Ranjha. Though Heer Ranjha has benn narrated by Damodar Das, Ahmed Gujjar and Mukbal, but the narration of Waris Shah is the best known.
Khwaja Ghulam Farid
Hazrat Khwaja Ghulam Farid (1845-1901) is the most known sufi poet of Indian Subcontinent. He knew a lot of languages such as Urdu, Persian, Arabic, Sindhi, Saraiki and Braj Bhasha. The famous works of Khwaja Ghulam Farid were Dewan-e-farid which is a Saraiki poetry, dewan-e-farid which is a urdu poetry and Manaqabe Mehboobia which is a collection of Persian proses.
Mian Muhammad Bakhsh
He was a Punjabi poet and a sufi saint. His writings were famous as Punjabi poetry and the significant work is Saif-ul-Maluk which is collection of Poetry.
